Birth of flytraps. Two-days old. The seeds of the Venus flytrap are relatively large, measuring 1mm or so. Germination begins as a jet-black, pear-shaped seed takes up water and swells. The embryonic root then emerges from the seed coat, from which sprout root hairs. As the root hairs anchor in the soil, twin cotyledons --- seed leaves --- appear. These cotyledons have no traps on them, but the leaf to appear right after the cotyledons has a miniature trap.

Two weeks old seedlings. Venus flytraps are a rather slow grower. It takes 4 to 5 years for the seedlings to reach flowing age.
