New pitcher leaves of the spring, reminiscent of parrots (hence the common name for this species), soon follow the tiny, red flowers bone singularly on a slender scape.  Spatial separation of pollinators and prey is better achieved in this species because of the low-lying pitchers that are often completely decumbent in open field where there is little grass cover.
