S. purpurea has the widest distribution, by far, of all pitcher plants, from the southeastern coastal plain to the Great Lakes region of the U.S., all the way northward to a large part of the southeastern Canada. In this species, the lid does not reflect over the pitcher opening.  This often results in rainwater filling the pitcher, creating a deadly pool of the digestive fluid. On a rainy day in late April, North Carolina.
