Programmable Buttons   Back to Nikon D300 Menu Hierarchy

Nikon D300 has three buttons that are user-programmable. Each of these buttons can be assigned to perform one of the following functions, for Button-only & Button+Dial:

CUSTOM SETTING MENU

f  Controls

f4   Assign FUNC button Default is Auto bracketing for Button+Dial (no setting for Button-Only).
f5   Assign preview button Default is Preview for Button-Only (no setting for Button+Dial).
f6   Assign AE-L/AF-L button Default is AE-L/AF-L (lock both AE & AF).

Button-Only - When pressed by itself:

Preview Depth of field preview.
FV lock Lock flash intensity.
AE/AF lock Lock auto-exposure & auto-focus, while being pressed.
AE lock only Lock auto-exposure only, while being pressed.
AE lock (Reset on release) Lock auto-exposure when pressed, until shutter release, pressed again or power off.
AE lock (Hold) Lock auto-exposure when pressed, and stay locked after shutter releases, until pressed again or power off.
AF lock only Lock auto-focus only, while being pressed.
AF-ON Activate auto-focus (for f6 only).
Flash off Suppress flash if pressed when shutter is released.
Bracketing burst  
Matrix metering Activate Matrix metering when pressed.
Center-weighted Activate Center-weighted metering when pressed.
Spot metering Activate Spot metering when pressed.
None No function assigned.

Button+Dial - When pressed in combination with a command dial:

1 step speed/aperture Shutter speed (for S or M exposure mode) or Aperture (for A or M exposure mode) can be changed in 1 EV increment.
Choose non-CPU lens number Choose a pre-registered non-CPU lens number. Click here for detail.
Auto bracketing Main command dial to set the number of shots; sub-command dial to set bracketing increment.
Dynamic AF area Main or sub-command dial to select 9 points, 21 points, 51 points or 51 points [3D-tracking]. Dynamic area AF & continuous AF mode only.
