Generally, flowering precedes
pitcher production by a month or two in most pitcher plant species,
supposedly providing "temporal" separation of flower
pollination and prey acquisition. S. minor is an exception
where flowering and pitcher growth occur concurrently. This species
is also an exception in that the flowers are positioned lower than the pitcher openings. Does it have anything to do with the fact that,
unlike the majority of other pitcher plants, this species has the pitcher
openings facing downwards - in the direction of blooming flowers? |
