The hooded pitcher has numerous white patches (areoles) void of pigmentation. These white windows are designed to light up the pitcher tube interior. Note also, that these areoles are strategically positioned towards the back of the pitcher. An insect, alighting at the rim of the pitcher, might mistake the brightly lit windows as an open exit, and attempt to fly through, only to slam against the wall and tumble into the pitcher tube..
